Evidence mounting that 2010 Audi S4 is underrated

Posted by AudiMobiles.com

To many people, Audi is replacing BMW as the go-to yuppie-mobile of choice. For one thing, Walter de’Silva’s designs are almost universally lauded (Q7 notwithstanding) whereas the new crop of Bangled Bimmers are… controversial to put it as nicely as humanly possible. But it’s not just down to looks and interior — it can’t be.

For the past decade or so Audi, BMW and of course Mercedes-Benz have all been engaged in mercilessly meeting each other tit-for-tat. 3/5/7 Series vs. 4/6/8 vs. C/E/S-Class, M/AMG/S, X5/ML/Q7, etc. It goes on forever. But the point is, Audi and BMW appear to be on equal footing and it looks like Audi has taken the copycat game to new heights.

Everyone knows that the BMW 335i is the most underrated car currently on the market in terms of raw thrust and grunt. BMW claims 300 hp and 300 torques, but even dogs know that BMW’s trick 3.0-liter twin-turbo engine puts out much closer to 350 hp and 350 tire-spinning pound feet of torque. Why? Well, lower insurance rates for their customers probably isn’t one of the reasons. However, remember that when the E90/E92 3 Series came out, BMW was still selling the 333 horsepower E46 M3. Meaning that it would be pretty hard to sell an older, $55,000 car with less power than a newer and just as quick $40,000 car. Or so the theory goes, though we should point out that BMW engineers angrily call us liars when we bring this scenario up.

And guess what? Looks like Audi is pulling the same trick with their new supercharged S4. Volkswagen and Audi tuner APR stuck a 2010 Audi S4 on an AWD-dyno and discovered the following. Instead of the 333 hp and 325 torques Audi is claiming, they pulled 331 hp and 336 pound-feet of torque… at the wheels! Figuring that AWD cars have about a 20% parasitic drivetrain power loss, the actual crank output of the S4 is huge. How huge? By our calculations just about 400 horsepower/torques. Gulp. Tip of the Audi driving cap to Brenton!

2011 Audi A8 with four-cylinder turbodiesel

Posted by AudiMobiles.com

Camouflaged prototypes of the 2011 Audi A8 have been caught running the Nurburgring, and accompanying these newest shots comes word that Audi’s reworked flagship will be available with a host of new powerplants.

According to reports, Audi’s range-topper will continue to be available with a W12, but it’s expected to grow from 6.1- to 6.5-liters and exceed 500 horsepower — 50 hp more than the outgoing twelve. Stepping down from that would be a supercharged V8 with more than 400 horsepower and a cylinder management system that could shut down up to four cylinders.

To really get the gas mileage going, however, Audi is reportedly working on a new 2.0-liter diesel with two turbos that pumps out more than 200 horsepower. If the new powerplant comes to market, it would match Mercedes-Benz’ BlueEfficiency four-cylinder in the S-Class. The new A8 is expected to debut at the Detroit Auto Show this January, with sales beginning in late 2010.

Stanford to run Audi TT-S up Pikes Peak next year

Posted by AudiMobiles.com

If you read AutoblogGreen regularly, then you already know that Volkswagen and Stanford University have taken their relationship that began with developing autonomous vehicles to compete in the government-sponsored DARPA Grand Challenge competitions to the next level. VW has committed over $5 million to open the Volkswagen Automotive Innovation Lab on Stanford’s campus with the intent of taking their research further regardless of whether the government is offering a carrot or not.

The two organizations are kicking off their new commitment to autonomous vehicles in a big way. Already under development is a the third-gen autonomous vehicle will make past DARPA Grand Challenge winners Stanley and Junior look obsolete by comparison. Based on an Audi TT-S, the new vehicle eschews all the outwardly visible hardware and has one expressed purpose: to tackle the Pikes Peak Hill Climb just like a real rally driver, four wheel drifts and all.

While still in the early stages, the team of researchers from Stanford have already performed tests with the autonomous TT-S at the Bonneville Salt Flats where the car was free to roam while being driving at the limit without a driver. They’ve also reportedly visited Pikes Peak with the car and ran it up the hill, albeit slowly.

Follow the jump to check out video of Stanford’s autonomous TT-S being tested, including a nifty little trick where it traces Audi’s corporate logo in the salt. It’s just a teaser for now, but we gotta admit the idea of watching an empty TT-S tackle Pikes Peak is tantamount to finally getting that flying car we were promised.

Audi launching special Forza edition TT?

Posted by AudiMobiles.com

As far as art imitating life goes, it doesn’t get much more realistic than Forza 3. But it was only a matter of time before life would in turn imitate art, and here it is: the Audi TT Forza Motorsport Edition.

Launched by Audi in conjunction with Microsoft, the Forza edition TT is being released to coincide with the rollout of the highly anticipated new video game. Of course, it comes with the requisite badging, but the real surprise is the bundled Xbox 360 Elite console, complete with a copy of Forza 3, in the trunk. We’ve yet to receive official confirmation beyond reports surfacing on overseas gaming sites, but sources suggest a retail price of about $35,000.

Audi A1 spotted!

Posted by AudiMobiles.com

Audi probably won’t be taking the wraps completely off its new small car until the Geneva Motor Show next March, but spy shooters are already out there hunting down the prototypes. The clearest image we’ve seen yet shows a mini-car that appears to have changed very little from the MetroProject concept that first appeared at the last Tokyo Motor Show two years ago. The new A1 is expected to go on sale around the middle of next year in Europe although its not clear if it will ever come Stateside.

To keep costs down, Audi is expected to build the A1 with a conventional steel structure as opposed to the aluminum space frame of the A2 of a few years ago. Power is expected to come from a range of gas and diesel engines likely topping out at about 1.4 liters. Some of the unseen mechanical bits will likely be shared with the new VW Polo, but this is definitely more than just a re-badge job as evidenced by the completely different shape.

Old School Haulin’ - MFK Autosport’s Powercar RS6

Posted by AudiMobiles.com

While most shops focus on tuning the latest Euro hotness, MFK has put its efforts into modifying the old-school (C5) Audi RS6, dropping the wagon over a set of 20×10.5-inch wheels and stretching some sticky 285/25 Dunlop rubber over each satin black, three-piece hoop.

Unfortunately, MFK hasn’t divulged what’s been done to the suspension, and there’s even less info about the engine mods. All we know is the twin-turbo, 4.2-liter V8’s software has been tweaked to coax out 520 horsepower - another 80 hp over the stock, Cosworth-modified mill - and a full sports exhaust is available for the princely sum of 5,999 euros (nearly $9k USD). Or maybe that’s a typo in the awkwardly translated press release below the fold.

The 2nd Annual Caruso Concours was held this past weekend at The Americana at Brand shopping center in Glendale, California. Put off a bit by threatening skies, we didn’t make it out there ourselves, but luckily, Autoblog friend and shutterbug Greg Grudt was there to capture all of the excitement for us. This sophomore outing was once again put on by The Petersen Automotive Museum, and as was the case last year, a brace of incredible vehicles showed up to this fitting but unorthodox locale. Showgoers could peruse the cars for a bit and then pick up a Tiffany necklace on their way out.

This year’s gathering focused on supercars - in particular, supercars capable of 200 mph. Not meant to be an exhaustive showing of double-century barrier breakers, it nonetheless attracted an impressive array of cars capable of close to, if not over, the magic mark. The fun part was just seeing them all together in one place. Judging by Grudt’s images, it looks like the Americana also happens to be hosting a few of those Toyota solar sunflowers, which made for an interesting juxtaposition.

Supercars right off the showroom floor mingled with old-timers from as far back as the Eighties. For instance, the display included not just the Bugatti Veyron, but also its forebearer, the EB110. The list of cars in attendance read like a roster of World’s Fastest Cars contenders. Ferrari was represented by an Enzo, F50, F40, 288GTO, 16M, and a SuperAmerica. The Lamborghini cluster was comprised of an LP670-SV, LP640-4, LP560-4 and even a Countach. There was also a Mercedes-McLaren SLR, CLK DTM, Ford GT, Dodge Viper, Cizeta V16t, Maserati MC12, Nissan GT-R, Audi R8, and even a Jaguar XJ220, which complemented the long flowing bodywork of the adjacent Maser quite nicely. They even dragged out the AREX Concept which was supposed to be good for 214 mph.

All-in, it appears to have been a great way to bring exotics to the people. Be sure to check out Greg’s pics in the gallery, and check out a larger gallery by clicking here.

Rendered Speculation: Pondering what an electric Audi R4 roadster would look like

Posted by AudiMobiles.com

Filed under: Convertible, Audi, Alternative Fuel

At last month’s Frankfurt Motor Show, Audi board member Michael Dick confirmed that a production version of the electric eTron sports car concept would be produced by late 2012. Following the show, Audi NA president Johan de Nysschen confirmed that announcement and now AutoExpress has produced a rendering of a production model. However, there appears to be some details lost in the translation. The eTron is based on the aluminum space frame of the R8 while AE says the R4 will be a smaller roadster with a chassis shared with the next generation Porsche Boxster/Cayman.

An Audi R4 has been speculated for some time, with the rumors flaring up after VW showed off the concept BlueSport in Detroit this year. It’s not clear if Audi will move ahead with the larger R8-based EV sportster or a smaller machine, or perhaps both. If they do, something like this rendering would be welcome, combining elements of the BlueSport, the eTron and even the top and flying buttresses of a Lotus Elise.

2010 Audi TT-RS by AVUS

Posted by AudiMobiles.com
With a stock power of 340bhp and 332 lb/ft of torque it is capable of doing the 0-60 in 4.6s. AVUS PERFORMANCE takes it a step forward and improves the power and the look of the TT-RS. Adjustable coilovers, gloss black 20″ Sportec Mono wheels make the TT-RS look much more aggressive. Thanks to the special setup which improves the factory suspension even further and makes the TT run a lot smoother not only on country roads. Different setups for the race track are avaiable either.

The matt black skin is something you will probably notice first when seeing the TT-RS. True to the motto „Gloss is out, matt is IN” tuner AVUS PERFORMANCE changes it to matt black (other colors avaiable on request). To give the TT-RS the final touch for the race track power has been increased significantly to a stunning 460bhp and more than 472 lb/ft of torque. 0-60 will be passed in about 3.8s and top speed increases to 194mph. Therefore AVUS PERFORMANCE modifies the turbo, ECU software and the exhaust system from turbo back with racing cats.

Attention, latest Sportec offer until 15th of December: Buy 4 wheels and pay only 3 (25% Discount)

- matt black „vinyl” - 1.999 Euro
